Privacy Policy for SMS Backup & Restore

This Privacy Policy explains how the SMS Backup & Restore Android application ("the App") handles, processes, and protects your personal data.

1. Data Collection & Processing

The App is designed to run entirely offline and operates locally on your Android device.

SMS Content & Metadata: The App reads your SMS messages to generate backup files and inserts them back into your device's database during restores. This processing occurs completely on-device.
No Server Transmission: We do not upload, transmit, share, or sell your SMS messages, logs, or any personal data to any external servers, cloud services, or third parties.
Storage Access Framework (SAF): Backups are saved as JSON files using the standard Android Storage Access Framework. You choose where to save the files (locally, on an SD card, or to your personal linked cloud storage provider). The App has no direct internet access permission.

2. Permissions Used

To function, the App requests specific sensitive permissions. Each is described below:

READ_SMS: Required to read the device's message database so a backup file can be generated.
Default SMS App Role: Required during a restore operation to write messages back to the system database. Android restricts writing to the SMS database to the active default SMS handler. The App prompts you to restore your preferred SMS app as default immediately after completion.

3. Analytics & Advertising

No Analytics: The App does not contain any third-party analytics libraries, tracking pixels, or telemetry logging.
No Ads: The App is completely ad-free.

4. Security

Since your message data remains on your own device and in the backup files you export, the security of your backups depends entirely on where you choose to store the JSON file. We recommend saving backups to secure, encrypted storage locations.

5. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted within the App or repository documentation.
